John Batley is a banjoist/ guitar player/ multi-instrumentalist from Rockhampton, Central Queensland. His passion for music started at an early age when he would smuggle a harmonica to school with which he would harass teachers and fellow students. The penny dropped at the age of 12 when his mother decided she had had enough of him tooting the harmonica, and organised guitar lessons with a local teacher. From there he learnt banjo, mandolin, bass guitar, vocals, and the Jews Harp. John's musical influences are vast; ranging from Johnny Cash, Flatt and Scruggs, Neil Young, and Mississippi John Hurt....to Ry Cooder, Béla Fleck, Jens Kruger, José Feliciano, and Phil Keaggy. John has played his unique blend of Roots/ Blues/ Country at various festivals including the Q150 Shed Tour, The Village Festival, and Easterfest; as well as being a contestant in the Telstra Road to Tamworth in 2010.

Let us tell you about the brand new CD. It's called "THE CLOUDLAND PROJECT" and features Chris Beunen( electric guitar, programming) and Stephen Linnane(acoustic guitar). Chris, Stephen and John have put their heads together to record 11 instrumental tracks to raise funds in support of an orphanage in Cambodia. Each of them have very different styles, which has meant every tune is unique. Check out this video called "KELLYS BEACH BLUES". This is an early mix of one of the tunes on the CD:

"If I'm performing on stage, quite often it's solo. However, more often than not I'm joined onstage by the brilliant percussionist; Josh Payne. Josh's style of playing is expressive and exciting. We've been playing together since 2006, and I'm just loving it. Being able to play with Josh has opened so many doors, and provided us with many Monday night practices".

Cambodian Orphans: Since a 2002 trip to Cambodia, John has had a passion for the orphanage he visited and for the people of that country. He writes, " My eyes have been opened to the real life need of so many, including the homeless and down trodden in our country of Australia. Visiting Cambodia forced a change in my thinking which needed to happen. No longer can I sit around complaining about my own circumstances and feeding my own selfishness." John Batley has a four track CD he sells at concerts with all proceeds going to the orphanage.
